George Washington Hayes was born to the union of Dewey and Betty Tharrington Hayes on January 6, 1929 in Franklin County, North Carolina. On the afternoon of January 1, 2019 at Louisburg Healthcare and Rehab in Louisburg, North Carolina the angel of death quietly took our beloved uncle, father, brother and friend.
George was educated at the former Franklin County Training School. He served two years in the United States Army with the rank of Corporal. George was stationed in Germany Field Artillery. He was honorably discharged. While in service he received the Army Occupational Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
He was employed at and retired from Avis Car Rental in Washington, District of Columbia. He was also employed as an automobile mechanic at a shop in Glenarden, Maryland for numerous years. He relocated back to Louisburg, North Carolina in 1990.
George was united in marriage to Leora T. Hayes, who preceded him in death by seven months. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Betty T. Hayes, six brothers, Bill, Zollie, Rev. Thomas, James, Jerry and McCoy.
Those left to cherish his memories are: a loving daughter, Diane Hayes Davis of Washington, DC; one sister, Ossie Wilkins of Louisburg, NC; one grandchild, Shawanna Davis of Washington, DC; three great grandchildren, Zenniah Davis, Zykeah Davis and Tarvis “Toby” Zion Best of Washington, DC; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Hayes of Woodbridge, VA and Odessa Hayes of Netonville, NJ; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
